Il se maria entre 1950 et 1957 avec Barbara Katharine Gallatin (1921-2008), récemment divorcée de Benjamin John Asaro.

Robert T. Anderson obtint en 1956 un doctorat d'anthropologie à l'unversité de Berleley (Californie).
Il obtint de plus en 1959 un doctorat le sociologie de l'université de la Sorbonne à Paris.
Il se spécialisa dans l'étude des sociétés complexes.
Il enseigna en 1959-1960 à l'université de Seathe (Washington).
Il exerça ensuite comme associated professor associé de sociologie et d'anthropologie au Mills College d'Oakland (Californie).
Il fut en 1966-1967 professeur associé invité dans le cadre du cours intégré en sciences sociales à l'université de Berkeley (Californie).
